Routines and Expectations for Division 15
1. Please ensure that your child has enough sleep the evening before and a breakfast before they come to school. We find a rested child is ready to learn.
2. Please ensure that your child is at school on time. This provides them with the opportunity to put their belongings away and independently change into their inside shoes. There is also a period of quiet reading at the beginning of the day which allows for the children to share books and connect with friends (quietly) before the day begins. This helps the children to settle into the classroom and ready themselves for carpet time, and the rest of the day.
3. If your child is going to be away from school or late, please call the school at 604-713-4595 so that you do not get a call home from early warning.
4. Gym is on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure that your child is wearing appropriate gym strip (runners, comfortable pants etc.) so that they are able to fully participate comfortably during these periods.
5. Library is Tuesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child brings his/her book bag with his/her books every week. Students choose 2 books to take home each week. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to supplement their home reading experience with different books every week. Please ensure that your child has a bag in which to take their books home. Reusable cloth bags or Nelson library book bags help preserve the life of the books.
6. Home reading is an important part of Grade 1. Please set time aside each evening to read these books with your child. Afterwards, please record the book title(s) on the home reading sheet. When your child fills out a sheet, we provide them with a new sheet and a small reward for their hard work. These books should be easy enough for students to read without assistance as this is an opportunity for them to build their confidence in their reading abilities.
7. Spelling words will also be sent home on a sheet every Monday. Please take time in the evening to review the spelling words with your child. They can print out the words, play fill in the blank with the words, or Hangman, etc. For students who feel confident with the words, they can also use them in sentences. Increasingly, we will be encouraging students to use words from their spelling units correctly in their daily writing. There is also daily spelling practice with the words.
8. We ask that you please remind your child to please leave their toys at home. These toys can become very distracting at school. This also ensures that toys or valuables are not misplaced.
9. Students will have music with Ms. Bachert on Tuesdays and Fridays in the afternoons.
10. We encourage you to review and reinforce Nelson's Code of Conduct with your child. We regularly review these concepts in order to develop socially responsible behaviour within the classroom and around the school.
11. Students take turns being the Special Helper. We rotate through the class list and students will be reminded of their Special Helper day one day prior to their special day. During their day, students will lead calendar and they are also invited to bring one item for sharing.
