Term 1 Overview
Language Arts
Division 15 participates in a weekly book sharing time in the school library with the librarian, Mrs. Lirenman. This time incorporates a story, a tie-in to school events such as holidays, and some library skills taught orally. This term students were introduced to the library, the organization of materials, and the parts of a book.
- -identifying the consonant sounds – m, s, f, b, t, c
- -recognizing first, last, and medial sounds in words
- -identifying words that start with certain letter sounds
- -developing a sight word vocabulary through reading and weekly spelling program
- -emergent writing: writing words using the sounds one hears (e.g. baby as babe)
- -printing: learning and practicing correct letter formation for upper and lower case letters
- -using spacing between words
- -learning the concept of a sentence (e.g. starting a sentence with a capital letter, ending a sentence with a period, correct grammar)
- -participating in guided reading, independent reading, shared reading, and buddy reading
- -predicting unknown words by using picture cues, knowledge of language patterns, and sound-letter relationships
- -chalkboard spelling using words from Spelling Through Phonics
- -choral reading and chanting of poems and songs
- -participating in Home Reading program
- -rote counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s
- sorting and classifying objects by one or two attributes (e.g. size, colour or shape)
- -creating patterns using two or three objects or colours
- -calendar math: applying math skills to everyday problems, counting ordinal numbers (first, second, third…)
- -comparing sets of items using the concepts of “more” and “less”
- -addition and subtraction facts to 10
- -identifying the parts of bats
- -identifying what bats need to grow and survive

- -safety in the gym: learning to move safely and follow directions
- -simple games and movement activities
- -Gym Sense Program – Students performed simple gymnastics movements. The focus was on balance, flow of body movement, rhythm, coordination, flexibility, agility, strength, and endurance. A variety of small equipment and apparatus was used.
- -developing a positive self-concept, independence and confidence
- -participating in Second Step lessons with a focus on learning empathy and problem-solving skills
- -learning about and participating sharing, cooperation, and respect for others and self
- -developing an appreciation for music through the daily Music Listening program
- -simple activities involving clapping and snapping patterns
- -learning and singing a variety of songs
- -art projects related to class themes; developing skill with a variety of materials and techniques
- -participating in music activities with Ms. Bachert, the music teacher, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
